The landscape of Guilin and Yangshuo looks as if it has been lifted straight from a classical Chinese painting. The best way to begin your exploration is with a leisurely cruise down the Li River, where you’ll witness the iconic view of karst peaks shrouded in mist, famously depicted on the 20 RMB note. Once in Yangshuo, trade the boat for a bicycle. Pedal along flat paths winding through lush countryside, past local villages and vast rice fields with the dramatic peaks as your constant backdrop. As evening falls, be sure to see the spectacular “Impression Sanjie Liu” light show, set on the river itself with the natural scenery as its stage.
